Choosing the finishing touches for your bedroom

The bed is the centerpiece of any bedroom, so aiming to make this the star attraction will transform the most boring of bedrooms into a space that reflects your personal style.

A beautifully finished upholstered bedhead will bring focus to the bed, and offers soft place to rest. Choose a bedhead with a button detail in a sumptuous fabric, such as velvet or silk, to give an elegant and luxurious feel. Upholster in leather or linen for a more contemporary style, opting for a design that is square edged and simple. Make the bedhead the statement by using a feature colour, and then use this as your starting point for the other items in your scheme.

A stunning bedside lamp will frame your bed, and bring you a dedicated reading light at night. It will create a more calming ambiance in your bedroom that bright overhead ceiling lights can’t achieve. Table lamps on bedside tables both sides of the bed are a timeless option that provides a good sense of symmetry and balance to a room. These lights can also be a great excuse to add something fun and are a unique way to accessorize your room. Choose lamps which make a statement about your personal style.

Space permitting, a carefully chosen furniture piece at the end of your bed is great for getting dressed, putting your shoes on, scattering some magazines or laying out a tea tray. You could try a chest or an upholstered ottoman. Create a look reminiscent of a boutique hotel bedroom.

Give your bed that finishing touch with bed linens, cushions and throws. Inject style and add depth by layering various textures and tones. Choose colours, patterns and materials that you love, so your bedroom becomes a calm and relaxing retreat. Echo the colours of a prominent feature, such as an artwork or wallpaper. Experiment with colour to lift a pared-back space, totally transforming the look and feel of your bedroom. Or, stick to plain white bedding as a failsafe starting point and add in blocks of colour, pattern and texture as you go. Remember to tie in the colours of your sheets for a coordinated look.
